Australia Defeats United Kingdom 3-2 at Empire Fight Series in Perth
Australia defeated the United Kingdom 3-2 in the international AUS vs UK Series at Empire Fight Series in Perth, Western Australia, with five high-level international matchups delivering an action-packed night of Muay Thai.
With national pride on the line, Australia secured three victories through Damon Nelson, Reece Corrigan and Cian Lougheed, while the United Kingdom answered with victories from Owen Gillis and Mia Skeer.
Owen Gillis Ends Hodgkinson’s Unbeaten Run
In the headline bout, England’s 2x WMO World Champion Owen Gillis showed his experience to claim a points decision victory over Perth hometown rising star Trent Hodgkinson in an action-packed contest worthy of Fight of the Night honours.
Hodgkinson entered riding a seven-fight unbeaten streak and faced the biggest international test of his career against the experienced World Champion. The pair delivered an entertaining battle, but after three rounds it was Gillis who earned the judges’ decision to secure an important victory for the United Kingdom.
Mia Skeer Hands Fon Piggott Her First Defeat
The co-main event featured a world-class international female matchup as UK #1 and ISKA World Champion Mia Skeer defeated Australia’s previously undefeated Fon Piggott by decision.
Piggott stepped into the biggest challenge of her career against the proven English World Champion, with Skeer ultimately earning the judges’ decision and handing the Australian the first defeat of her career.
Damon Nelson Celebrates 50th Fight with Victory
Australian team captain Damon Nelson bounced back into winning form with a dominant performance in front of his hometown crowd, defeating England’s Levi Bailey by unanimous decision.
The victory came on a special night for Nelson as the former WBC International Champion celebrated the 50th fight of his career, producing a strong performance against the reigning WBC British and European Champion to put another win on the board for Australia.
Reece Corrigan Continues Impressive Run
Suay Muay Thai’s Reece Corrigan continued his impressive run with a dominant international victory over English Champion Tyler Hogan.
The contest marked Corrigan’s first appearance in his new Super Lightweight division (63kg) after previously capturing both the WBC and WMC Australian Lightweight Titles.
Another impressive performance against international opposition puts Corrigan straight into the mix in arguably one of Australia’s most competitive divisions, with several major domestic Super Lightweight matchups now potentially on the horizon.
Cian Lougheed Sets the Standard for Australia
In the opening Australia vs United Kingdom matchup, former WBC Australian Champion Cian Lougheed set the standard for the Australian team with a dominant and explosive performance against England’s Jack Garcia.
Lougheed applied the pressure throughout before securing the victory in the third round, with Garcia’s corner throwing in the towel to bring the contest to an end and award Lougheed the TKO victory.
